A technology using a waste product from the coconut processing industry, called cocopeat, improves wastewater treatment in poor countries, according to testing conducted by researchers at RTI International. RTI International, with funding provided by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Grand Challenges Explorations initiative, developed and tested low cost secondary wastewater treatment systems using cocopeat. The system takes up less space than other technologies, is easy to assemble and is inexpensive to operate.

MANN+HUMMEL USA Inc. has developed a new three-layer cabin air filter using polyphenol, a natural plant extract, to lock allergens and prevent them from entering the vehicle.

MANN-FILTER introduced the new cabin air filter at the Automotive Aftermarket Products Expo (AAPEX) Oct. 30-Nov. 1, 2012, at the Sands Expo Center in Las Vegas, Nev.

Protection against nerve agents – such as tabun, sarin, soman, VX, and others – is a major terrorism concern of security experts. Nerve agents, which attack the nervous system of the human body, are clear and colorless or slightly colored liquids and may have no odor or a faint, sweetish smell. They evaporate at various rates and are denser than air. Current methods to detect nerve agents include surface acoustic wave sensors; conducting polymer arrays; vector machines; and the most simple: color change paper sensors. Most of these systems have have certain limitations including low sensitivity and slow response times.

Wood and pulp giant Weyerhaeuser says it has figured out how to make a thermoplastic composite using engineered cellulose fiber from trees, instead of the short glass fibers usually used for reinforcement. Applications for the material include automotive parts and industrial components.

The composite, called THRIVE, is targeted at low-load applications such as office furniture, consumer appliances, kitchenware, and household goods, in addition to car parts. According to the company, compared to composites made with short glass fibers, or natural fibers like sisal, hemp, and kenaf, the new material has several advantages.

Concerns over resource scarcity are creating "unprecedented" investment opportunities as companies seek to exploit clean-tech solutions and technologies to drive value creation in this field.

According to environmental investment firm Impax Asset Management, rapidly depleting resources coupled with rising population growth is set to trigger a "revolution in efficiency" which will both be fundamental and long term in nature - making it a highly attractive proposition for investors.

Date palm leaves can help remove chemicals like pharmaceuticals and dyes from hospital waste water before it is discharged into the municipal sewers, says a scientist from a university in Oman.

Al Said Al Shafey, principal investigator of a project at the chemistry department of Sultan Qaboos University in Muscat, has started a research with an objective to establish a physico-chemical unit for the treatment of hospital waste water. Al Shafey said they could extract dehydrated and activated carbons from date palm leaves, which is a cheap and sustainable resource in Oman.
