Sri Lanka coconut and coconut based products sector has recorded an overall growth of 9 % in 2012 up to August earning a revenue of Rs. 32 billion in comparison with the corresponding figure of Rs 29 billion in 2011.
Export of raw fiber brought in revenue of Rs. 3,904 million in 2012 up to August in comparison with the corresponding figure of Rs. 3,701 million in 2011, a Coconut Development Authority official told Daily News Business.
The coconut based finished products exports grew by 17 % to Rs. 9,768 million during the first eight months of 2012 in comparison with the corresponding figure of Rs 8,375 million in 2011.The activated carbon industry showed signs of improvement recording
Rs. 6,208 million income in the first eight months of 2012 as against Rs. 4,508 million recorded during the corresponding period last year. Total shell products export volume (activated carbon, coconut shell flour, coconut shell charcoal) was 26,122 metric tones in 2012 up to August and Sri Lanka has exported 24,079 metric tones of shell products in the first eight months of 2011.However, local coir brushes, rags and mats exports showed a slight drop in the first eight months of 2012.
