Sri Lanka's Ministry of Industry and Commerce has decided to introduce new coir products to the international market to enhance the exports of coconut coir fiber based products.
Although Sri Lanka has earned a considerable foreign exchange from exported value added coir products which include more than ten items such as coir brushes, mattresses and geo mats, the Ministry hopes to develop new coir fiber based products to enhance the export market.
The Ministry has focused on introducing new technology for manufacturing of traditional coir products such as carpets and wall hangings while generating new self-employment opportunities for the unemployed.
Sri Lanka produces 35percent of the world's natural coir output and 90percent of coir exports are in raw form.
New galleries featuring traditional coir products would be established in tourist zones of the country, the Ministry said.
