According to archived information published by the Hawaii State Energy Office, the company intended to convert macadamia nut shells into biobased activated carbon, which could be used for air, water and chemical purification. The Energy Office also noted that the shells could also be converted into biofuels, which when blended with diesel, could be used to power the company’s facility.

According to EPA standards, when chlorine is used as a disinfectant in water treatment, it reacts with the natural organic matter in the water to form harmful by-products. When consumed, these disinfection by-products (or DBPs) have been linked to increased risks for cancer. EPS offers full water quality evaluations to drinking water utilities that will analyze DBP content in water and provide a customized evaluation for proper mitigation.
