Export of coconut and coconut products reached a record Rs 1,050 crore in 2012-13.

This is a landmark in coconut exports. Last fiscal, coconut exports other than coir and coir products registered a growth of 26 per cent in value and 32 per cent in the quantum.

The U.S. Department of Commerce today announced its preliminary antidumping margins calculated in connection with the fifth annual administrative review of the antidumping duty order on steam activated carbon from the People's Republic of China, noted Kelley Drye & Warren, LLP, counsel to domestic activated carbon manufacturers.  Activated carbon is used in drinking water, wastewater, odor control, and pollution abatement systems.

Sri Lanka's Haycarb group, an activated carbon producer which also has plants in Thailand and Indonesia said net profits grew 39 percent to 196 million US dollars in the December 2012 quarter from a year earlier, though revenues were flat.

There’s a war on coal in America—or at least, that’s what the coal industry says. They’re not entirely wrong. Coal prices in the U.S. are falling and coal plants are being retired. Most of that change is being driven by what analysts refer to as “market conditions”—otherwise known as shale gas and fracking, which has driven prices for natural gas down, down, down. That’s encouraged utilities to phase out coal in favor of cleaner natural gas—a transition that has been accelerated by federal environmental regulations that will increasingly limit the sort of air pollution associated with old coal plants.

The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index®, which had declined in August, improved in September. The Index now stands at 70.3 (1985=100), up from 61.3 in August. The Expectations Index increased to 83.7 from 71.1. The Present Situation Index rose to 50.2 from 46.5 last month.
